Mrview command not working

I have installed mrtrix3 in windows 7 paltform. While trying to execute the command mrview getting the below errors:

It looks like your graphics card or the software drivers for your graphics card don’t support the features needed by MRView (OpenGL 3.3). I’m surprised that you’d have trouble on a Windows 7 platform, OpenGL 3.3 is pretty standard these days.

Are you running this on a virtual machine, by any chance? It’s difficult to get that kind of setup working.

Otherwise, let us know what graphics card you’re running. You might find that simply upgrading the drivers might be sufficient…

The graphics card in my machine is NVIDIA Quadro FX 580.
I can see the opengl32.dll library file in my machine.
But still I am getting the error

I am trying to install mrtrix3 in windows 7 for past 5days. Each time after installation when I am trying to run the command ‘mrview’, I am getting the below error. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times the mrtrix3, but still the mrview command is not working and giving me error :—

Ok, as I suggested earlier, your graphics card (or rather its software) does not support OpenGL 3.3. the debug output clearly states that it provides OpenGL 3.1. This is a property of your system, not MRtrix3 - there’s little point trying to rebuild MRtrix3…

Unfortunately, the Quadro FX 580 is a rather old card (it’s listed as legacy on the nvidia website), but other sources suggest that a driver update might allow it to provide OpenGL 3.3. So your best bet is to download the latest drivers from nvidia, install them, and see whether that fixes things… If that doesn’t work, you’ll probably have to upgrade your graphics card to get MRView to work…

Thanks @jdtournier for the reply! I am quite new in this software and was scratching my head to find out what is going wrong. Hope now it will be sorted once I upgrade the openGL to the required version. Thanks for the clue!!

Regarding this particular error:

$ ./build debug/bin/mrview
ERROR: cannot find file "cmd/mr.cpp"

This is occurring because the full path to the executable on Windows is debug/bin/mrview.exe. The build script is trying to find the corresponding cmd/ file by truncating the last 4 characters to get rid of the expected .exe, but in your case it’s truncating the ‘view’ from mrview. I should be able to modify the build script to handle this better (it’s caught me out a few times as well).

Dear experts,
We are trying to install mrtrix on redhat centos 7 machine where mesa-libGL-18.3.4-12.el7_9.x86_64 is installed.

We have sucessfully installed MRtrix using anaconda. However, mrview command is no working. We have attached the error that is displayed while we run the command. Rest of the other functions are working well.


Could you please suggest what has to be done to make it functional.

Hi,

Yes, getting OpenGL to work can be a bit painful… I assume you’ve already had a look through this wiki post on the topic.

First thing is to figure out what hardware you have installed:

lspci -v

Look for the ‘VGA compatible controller’ line.

Next is to make sure you’re running locally, not over a network connection – mrview will not (easily) work over an X11 connection unfortunately.

At this point, we’ll probably need more information about what’s going on with your OpenGL setup. The best source of information is to run:

glxinfo

and post the full output here for us to inspect. Hopefully that’ll provide some insight into the problem…

I have a related issue to the issues posted here.

We also have a NVIDIA grapics card. From the root user, we can open mrview just fine. However, when I try to open mrview from another user on the same computer, the errors I get are:

[WARING] Sync set up failed.

And then also gives the same errors mentioned above about the OpenGL version not being compatible (supposedly version 1.3, when 3.3 or higher is needed). Which is weird to me, because apparently from root there is no issue…

Do you have any suggestions to solve this issue?

OK, there’s a few issues to work out here. The warning you’re showing refers to the sync feature (which allows multiple mrview instances to synchronise the location of the crosshairs), and I think @Lee_Reid would be better placed to answer that bit. But I doubt this has any bearing on the OpenGL issue – although it may signal an issue with permissions, which I suspect this may be about…

What is the output of the glxinfo command when invoked from your user account? Are you able to run any other OpenGL applications? There’s a little test application called glxgears that you may be able to install & run to double-check. If either of these commands fail to run, or produce an error message, then the issue is not MRtrix-related, but strictly about your OpenGL setup. At this point, I’m happy to guide you, but I’d need to have a lot more information about your system:

  • which exact operating system (I’m assuming Linux, but it’s not stated), distribution and version of that.
  • which version of the drivers you’re using (I’m assuming you’re using the NVidia drivers, not the open-source nouveau drivers?)
  • the full output of the commands above (glxinfo and glxgears).
  • whether you’re running on Wayland or Xorg (assuming Linux). To find out, I think you can run:
    echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
    
  • whether this is your own system, or one provided by your institution, and whether there’s anything unusual about how it was set up.

  • Lastly, this system belongs to my institution, but is not directly connected to the overall hospital network (which puts many restrictions on the computers for most users as you probably know). So it’s a seperate computer that belongs to our research group. Nothing notably unusual about the set-up.

OK, from what I can tell, there is indeed an issue with your OpenGL setup. This is the relevant bit from the (lengthy) output of glxinfo:

This shows that the display you’re using is not using the Nvidia drivers, but the open-source mesa ones, and what’s more it’s falling back on the software renderer (llvmpipe) – without GPU acceleration. On top of that, that software renderer only supports OpenGL 3.1, which explains why it won’t allow mrview to run (we need OpenGL 3.3).

So you’d need to figure out why your session isn’t running with the expected drivers. I suspect this will have something to do with this:

That suggests you’re not running within a graphical environment – I get that output if I log on to a remote system via SSH, or through one of my system’s virtual terminals. Normally, I would expect you to get either x11 or wayland as the output here…

But if you are running this over a remote connection, then please look through this page – main point is it’s very difficult to get that to work… On the other hand, if you are running locally, and the terminal you typed that into was launched within a local desktop session, then I’m not sure what’s going on…
